On October 11, 2012, in New York City, the first annual Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards and Gala will take place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The event, a concept of the parents of Amy Winehouse, the beloved English singer who died unexpectedly in 2011, is their way of honoring Amy’s legacy by giving acknowledgement to those whose works and achievements have inspired greatness in others. The awards and gala are part of a newly-expanded branch of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a nonprofit organization which provides support for charitable activities in education and the arts to help ill and otherwise disadvantaged children in the UK and abroad.
I love that her parents are carrying on her legacy in such a positive way. I really wish that others would consider ways of honoring their loved ones legacies, too. It doesn’t have to be as extravagant as the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards, but it could be something as simple as an annual community fundraiser for a favorite charity or establishing a small scholarship or recognition award at the person’s high school or college alma mater. It can be something as simple as an annual family gathering. Small expressions of kindness can go far in making an impact on other lives, making sure that a loved one is remembered and that their legacy lives on forever.
