Tennis sensation Maria Sharapova was forced to exit this year’s Wimbledon Championships after her loss to Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round of matchups. Although she was clearly disheartened, she chose not to focus on the loss, the possible reasons for it, or even the fact that it knocked her out of the top seed position—instead she committed herself to using the loss as motivation towards her future goals.

Sometimes when we experience defeat, it can be difficult to see or feel any type of ‘silver lining’ or feel anything other than the pain and sadness of the loss. But what if we instead followed the example of the Maria Sharapova Wimbledon defeat? What if we placed our emotions and energies into finding the life lesson(s) in it all? What if we used our losses as motivation to work harder? Think smarter? Be better? We can gain so much more from making our life’s defeats as fuel to develop the best in us than we ever could allowing them to bring out the worst in us.
