When actor Andrew Garfield won the lead in the movie The Amazing Spider Man, he was nowhere near the extraordinarily buff and strong superhero physique that appears on screen. In fact, according to movie producers, the build of his body was the total opposite of what was needed to make the portrayal of the character believable.
According to producers, he was a “nerdy, skinny, young kid.”
They knew Andrew Garfield was perfect for the Spider Man character, yet they needed to make him look the role. So to help, Stunt Coordinator Andy Armstrong used inspiration from a very familiar face: Bruce Lee.
“He wanted to get genuine strength. Our only reference point when approached to help create the character was an early ’60s picture of Bruce Lee’s torso. That was the form they’d love this character to be based on.” [MTV News]
Referencing the image of Bruce Lee was exactly what was needed to inspire Andrew Garfield to train and build his body to meet the demand.
“[He became] that picture. It was that ’60s picture of Bruce Lee’s body, nothing but sinew and muscle. He realized this as well. He became an inch and a half taller, just in posture. He was sensational.”[MTV News]
When there is a ‘desired role’ in life that you know you are perfect for but not quite ‘developed’ to take on, the best way to start on your journey to getting there is to draw inspiration from another person who exemplifies what you are aspiring to be. Use photos of the person, quotes that they have said, or examples of their work to give you the boost you need to work towards your desired role. You can even create a vision board with the above-mentioned items placed in an area where you spend most of your time, or set photos or quotes as screensavers on your tech devices. Anything and anywhere that will give you an often reminder of your desired target. Being inspired by others is a surefire way to help you achieve what you want.
