There once was a time when going without food equaled being poor, impoverished, or homeless. However, with the huge shifts in the economy over the past few years, the problem of hunger has come to mean so much more.

Today, 1 in 6 people in the United States struggle with hunger. And these are children and adults who appear to be healthy and well-nourished on the surface, but take a closer look and you will discover that everything may not be all it appears to be.

September is Hunger Action Month, and there are so many different ways that people can show support and help raise awareness to the rapidly increasing problem of hunger.

One way to show support is to seek out local charity events to attend. Such events usually ask for a contribution of non-perishable food items or a monetary donation which benefits a non-profit food distribution center.

Here are some photos from a charity event that I attended last week that supported one of the organizations in my city, St. Louis Area Foodbank.

Volunteering at an area food pantry is a great way to get involved for Hunger Action Month. Such centers can always use an extra pair of hands on board to help with sorting, packaging, and delivery. It can be done solo or with family or a group of friends. Youth and young adults can even earn community service hours. A small amount of time given really goes a long way.

If your schedule does not allow for volunteering or attending charitable events, simply make a donation. A gift of non-perishable food items or a monetary donation would be a great help to those in need. Plus, it’s convenient: many grocery stores periodically host bins or small boxes for food and cash donation as well.

Hunger is something that everyone can do something about. No matter how small the act, each and every person has the power to make a difference. Take some time to get involved for Hunger Action Awareness Month!
