News Notes: NFL Carolina Panthers Player Steve Smith Washes Feet of Homeless, Gives Away Shoes [VIDEO]

While most players in the NFL are focused on getting to the Superbowl this season, one player is focused on giving to the less fortunate.

Carolina Panthers Wide Receiver Steve Smith is on a personal mission to give away 500,000 pairs of shoes to the homeless, and he has partnered with nonprofit organization Samaritan’s Feet as a Football Ambassador to aid in his efforts. In addition to personally hosting shoe distributions at every Carolina Panthers away game throughout the NFL season, Smith has committed to giving foot rubs to the homeless as well.

For Smith, the foot rubs are his way of being of service to the impoverished population across the country, and also offering a sense of hope.

“It’s such a private and personal gesture … for some people that’s the first time their feet have been touched by someone else.”[FoxNews]

To further raise awareness of those in need, Smith will remove his shoes and socks at the end of every game and walk barefoot to the locker room–a symbolic gesture that has never been done before in professional sports. His shoes will then be auctioned online to help purchase shoes for the cause.
