In sharing fond Holiday memories with my children last night, we came upon the topic of differences between how kids were during the Holiday season when I was a child versus how they are now—particularly in the area of getting exactly what they want. My, oh my, what a difference a few years make!
.
I told them how during my childhood, kids would start their ‘receiving season’ by anxiously awaiting the arrival of their parents’ department store ‘Wish Book’ in the mail. The book was huge, with oodles and oodles of pages showcasing images of every single toy that a young heart could ever desire.
.
Remember this?
.
Some kids circled or starred the items they wanted and left it at that. Others would use the book to create their handwritten wish lists to either slip to their parents in an extreme sly fashion, or mail off to the North Pole, keeping their fingers crossed. I even knew of some kids that carried the book around with them everywhere they went, even hauling it back and forth to school every day (not quite sure why though
).
.
Now, kids are completely different when it comes to ensuring their wishes come true for the Holidays. Luckily in this age, 5000-page manual Wish Books are not required. Kids these days can get what they want, with or without their parents’ direct help
.
You do not believe me? Just take a look at this video by comedian Kevin Hart as he shares his experiences while spreading a little Holiday cheer:
.
.
Now that my kids are getting older and technology is rapidly evolving, I know the probabilities of my children completing their Holiday Wish Lists without me increase more and more with each passing year. And even now every child in my home knows how to get exactly what they want on their own. No more waiting for parents or wishing for the gifts they desire—if they want it now, they can get it now. All of the tools they need to accomplish their quests are right at their fingertips.
I just hope that they continue to let me be a part of their Holiday shopping!

What was your strategy for getting the exact gifts you wanted as a child? Does kids’ ability to get gifts on their own in this day and age alter your shopping strategy for them? Share with me below or tell me about it at: melisasource@yahoo.com.

I used to go through the big catalog book and put stars on what I wanted. I had stars on almost every page. I had so many stars I could not even remember them all. ON Christmas morning I would be thrilled with everything under the tree. Even though it would only be a portion of the things I’d stared.
Greetings Chasing Joy! I remember doing that too! What great memories those were, huh Just the sheer “magic” and anticipation of it all — I wish those days would come back! ~Thank you so much for sharing here with me!
I’m still amazed that my 1yr old knows how to work my iPad, and the 3 & 5 yr olds know how to do stuff on it that I don’t know how to do myself. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they figure out how to order toys online (note to self: disable all credit cards associated with online accounts). LOL

Times have definitely changed! My nephews have a wii, xbox, and a kinect, but asked Santa for a wiiu and a nook. They can log online to make a wish list! But they still circle items from the mailers. They have a straight A strategy. Excellent students and very well-behaved, so most of what they ask for they get!
Greetings Heather! I love the fact that your nephews still circle items in mailers! And yes with the way you describe them, they definitely deserve to get what they want!
